The Sox had a getaway day game in the humid heat at Fenway where they hoped to get a win and the sweep against the Twins. The Sox had John Lackey on the mound vs. Kyle Gibson for the Twins. Both pitchers put on a show and the game was still tied 0-0 when it headed into extra innings. Koji gave up the lead and the big Sox bats went back to back with homers to walk off with the win!
Both of the starting pitchers were putting on a show. I think if they were matched up against anyone else, they’d for sure be in line for a win. Gibson pitched 7 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit while Lackey pitched 9 scoreless innings, allowing only 3 hits himself. They were both absolutely amazing. Both teams have been struggling with offense, however both pitchers were also just absolutely dealing.
Since Lackey was done after 9 innings, closer Koji Uehara came in to pitch in the 10th inning. Koji had an uncharacteristic outing and allowed an actual run. Uehara had two outs and then gave up a solo HR to Parmalee. Sox 0-1. If the Sox were gonna get the sweep of the Twins they would need to do something in the next inning. Luckily for the Sox they had the heart of the order up in the next inning: Pedroia, Ortiz and Napoli. Pedey flied out to start the inning, but then David Ortiz came to the plate. Papi fouled off a bunch of pitches until he hit a ball that curved around the Pesky Pole for a game tying homerun. Sox 1-1. David Ortiz defines the definition of clutch in Boston. Next Mike Napoli came to the plate. Nap hit a ball to centerfield that went into the bleachers and the Sox walked off on back to back homeruns in the 10th inning. The Sox completed the sweep of the Twins, all while scoring 5 runs total.
