Sox Lose Series Finale With O’s in Extras

The Red Sox split the doubleheader and had a chance to take the series if they won the game on Sunday.  The Sox had a big rally to tie the game in the 7th inning, but were unable to get the go ahead run and fell to the O’s in the 12th inning.

Jake Peavy took the mound for the Sox and was looking to get his first win in a while.  Peavy has not had a winning decision in his last 12 starts.  The game stayed scoreless until the 4th inning when Peavy gave up his first run of the outing.  Peavy gave up double to Cruz and then Cruz scored on an error from Bogaerts at 3rd base.  Peavy kept the score 0-1 until the 6th inning when the O’s had the bases loaded with one out and Joseph hit a sac fly to have the O’s up 2-0.  The Sox finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 6th when Ortiz hit an RBI single to score Nava.  Sox 1-2.

The 7th inning would end up being the most interesting of the afternoon. Badenhop took the mound in relief of Peavy.  Badenhop has struggled his last couple times out and yesterday would be no different.  Badenhop gave up 3 straight singles including an RBI single to Nelson Cruz.  Sox 1-3.  Tazawa came into the game with one out in hopes of stopping the bleeding.  Unfortunately Tazawa was not able to get the job done.  He gave up a 2 run RBI single to Hardy and an RBI single to Flaherty.  Sox 1-6.  It looked like the Sox were sunk, but then the Sox bats finally came alive in the bottom of the inning.  David Ross hit a solo HR to have the Sox within 4 runs.  The Sox then went on to tie the game with RBI singles from Bogaerts, Nava, Ortiz and Napoli.  The Orioles sent 4 pitches to the mound in the 7th in an attempt to get the 3 outs they needed.  Nevertheless the inning ended with the game tied 6-6.

Andrew Miller pitched a scoreless 8th and once again looked like one of the best relievers in the Sox pen.  Koji Uehara pitched both a scoreless 9th and then a scoreless 10th when the Sox headed to extra innings.  Edward Mujica pitched a scoreless 11th inning, but as the Sox bats were unable to get anything going, the game would end up being decided in the 12th inning.  Mujica continued pitching in the 12th and would give the O’s the go ahead run.  Mujica gave up a leadoff triple to Lough and then he was able to score by way of an RBI single from Hardy.  Sox 6-7.  In the bottom of the 12th the Sox had a moment of hope when Papi hit a ball to the Monster, but he tried to leg a single into a double and was thrown out by a mile.  Napoli struck out for the 3rd out and the game was over.
