The Red Sox have been on quite a roll lately and hoped to take that momentum into their series with the Blue Jays. The Red Sox have games within the division for the next 4 series, so how they fair will be very telling to what this team has in them. In last night’s game against the Jays, they sure put on a show and got people thinking that the Sox might have a shot to get back in this race in the 2nd half of the season.
The Red Sox first got on the scoreboard in the 2nd inning when Stephen Drew hit an RBI single and then Vazquez hit an RBI infield single. Sox 2-0. The Sox put up a crooked number in the 3rd inning when Drew continued his hot night at the plate by hitting a 3 run homerun followed by an RBI double from Jackie Bradley Jr. Drew was brought here for his defense, but the fact that his bat is coming around is a good good thing. Sox 6-0. John Lackey was putting up a mighty fine pitching performance at the same time that the Sox bats were exploding. The only run he gave up in his outing was an RBI double to Francisco in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Sox 6-1.
In the 4th the Sox bats got back at it when David Ortiz hit a 2 run homerun to put the Sox up 8-1. In the 5th the Sox blew the game wide open with another offensive explosion. Jackie Bradley Jr. hit an RBI double, Vazquez hit an RBI sac grounder and then Holt hit an RBI single to center. Sox 11-1. The Sox weren’t done in the inning yet though. David Ortiz came to the plate and hit his 2nd homerun of the game and then Napoli came up behind him with a homerun of his own. Sox 14-1. Wowza.
While the Sox were attacking the Jays pitching, Lackey just kept trucking along. Lackey pitched 7 strong innings and continued to look like someone that the Sox can lean on going down the stretch. In the 8th inning the Sox sent someone to the mound that has been a ghost around here for the last month of so: Felix Doubront. Doubront had himself a dominant inning getting 3 quick outs, including two strikeouts while only throwing 7 pitches. If that is how Felix is going to pitch out of the bullpen, I’d like to see him more often. The 9th inning was given to Craig Breslow who had an easy scoreless inning to notch down the series opener for the Sox. Watching this game was a lot of fun, which hasn’t been the case for much of the 2014 season.
