The Red Sox had been riding a nice little win streak, but then Jake Peavy took the mound and it all went wrong. Peavy has been looking for his 2nd win of the season since the end of April and bad luck loser would once not get that elusive 2nd win. Peavy got no run support, but he also didn’t help him case crumbling in the later innings.
The Jays were the first to crack the scoreboard in the 3rd inning when Peavy gave up an RBI single to Cabrera to score Gose from 3rd. Sox 0-1. The Sox had a chance to score in the 4th with the bases loaded and 2 outs, but Stephen Drew wasn’t able to drive anyone in. The Sox also had a runner in scoring position in the 5th, but Papi wasn’t able to get the clutch hit in that inning. The Sox kept having chances, but weren’t able to get Peavy any runs of support. There seems to always be one pitcher who the bats go silent for and this year it is definitely Jake Peavy.
Peavy was still on the mound in the 6th and the game seemed to get away from him at that point. Peavy gave up a leadoff homerun to Jose Reyes and then a 2 run homer to Navarro to have the Sox down 0-4. Peavy was still on the mound in the 7th, but when he gave up 2 singles Farrell decided to go get him in favor of Burke Badenhop. Unfortunately Badenhop wasn’t able to keep the Jays off the scoreboard when he gave up an RBI single to Cabrera. Sox 0-5.
The Sox finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the 8th when David Ortiz did what David Ortiz does and hit a solo HR. Sox 1-5. It was a start, but they definitely needed more. Felix Doubront took to the mound for the 2nd day in a row when he pitched the bottom of the 8th. Felix has expressed how much he is frustrated by his limited role with the team and that probably sounded sour given how his inning went last night. Dooubront gave up an RBI single to Goins and then an RBI double to Reyes. Sox 1-7. That’s not how you pitch yourself back into contention. The Sox tried to rally against the Jays closer Casey Janssen, but it was too little too late. Stephen Drew hit a 2 run HR to bring the Sox within 4 runs, but that is all that they were able to muster. It does show that Drew’s bat is continuing to show some life, so I’ll take that as the silver lining in a frustrating loss.
