The Red Sox keep finding new and even more horrible ways to lose games. The only real glimmer the Sox has had in the last week or so was the epic offensive beat down they had on the Jays in the series opener up in Toronto. Well it looks like the Jays wanted to give the Sox a taste of their medicine in completely destroying the team last night on way to a devastating 14-1 loss.
Clay Buchholz was the starting pitcher for the Sox and he didn’t give much confidence that he could be someone leading the Sox rotation in years to come. Buchholz gave up an early lead when he gave up a 2 run homerun to Melky Cabrera in the 1st inning. Buchholz gave up 2 more runs in the 4th inning when he gave up a 2 run RBI single to Goins. Sox 0-4. Buchholz took the mound in the 6th inning, but he wouldn’t end up finishing it. Clay gave up an RBI double to Goins to have the Jays up 5-0. Farrell had seen enough and went to get him in favor of Felix Doubront.
Having Doubront in the game did not turn the luck around for the Sox. Doubront has been unhappy with his role and critical of the Sox in the media in the past few weeks. Doubront feels he should be starting, but his performance in last night’s game didn’t do much to support his opinion. By the end of the inning the Jays would be leading 13-0. Doubront gave up a sac fly to Reyes, a 3 run HR to Cabrera, an RBI double to Rasmus, an RBI double to Kawasaki and an RBI grounder to Goins. Farrell went out to get Doubront who not only allowed 8 runs to score, but also wasn’t able to get 3 outs to put the inning away. Burke Badenhop was the third pitcher of the inning and was able to get the final out to finally put the 6th to bed.
In the bottom of the inning the Red Sox finally got on the scoreboard when they scored their first and only run by way of a David Ortiz RBI single to score David Ross. Sox 1-13. Badenhop stayed on the mound in the 7th and ended up allowing a run to score by way of a wild pitch. The Jays were now leading 14-1. Breslow pitched a scoreless 8th and then Mujica pitched a scoreless 9th, but the Sox still lost a brutal one with the final score of 14-1.
