Buchholz Pitched the Game Away and Yankees Take Series

The Red Sox bats came out to play, but unfortunately the last remaining starter from 2013 wasn’t able to keep the home team ahead.  Clay Buchholz not once, but twice threw away a 3 run lead and allowed the Yankees to tie the game in his 5 innings of work.  The Yankees went ahead in the 6th inning and never looked back.  This game showed just how much trouble the Sox are going to have in 2014 if they don’t do something and do something big about their pitching problems.

The Red Sox jumped out to an early lead when the Sox bats scored 3 runs of Yankee starter David Phelps in the 1st.  Ortiz hit a sac fly to score Holt and then Nava hit a 2 run RBI single to score Pedroia and Cespedes.  Sox 3-0.  That lead was short lived though as Clay Buchholz gave it right back in the top of the 2nd.  Buchholz loaded the bases without recording an out and then gave up 3 runs himself.  Stephen Drew hit an RBI groundout and then Brett Gardner hit a 2 run RBI double.  Sox 3-3.  The Sox got right back on top in the bottom of the 2nd when Dustin Pedroia hit a 2 run HR to the Monster.  Sox 5-3.  The Yankees got within one run when Stephen hit an RBI double to score McCann.  Sox 5-4.  The Sox bats got going again in the bottom of the 4th when David Ortiz hit a 2 run bomb to have the home team leading 7-4.

Clay Buchholz took the mound in the 5th for the second time with a 3 run lead and it would be the second time he would widdle it away.  Headley hit an RBI double to score Beltran and then Stephen Drew would hit a 2 run RBI single to tie the game.  Sox 7-7.  Clay Buchholz sure didn’t show that he is anywhere near that pitcher he was last year.  If Buchholz is leading the rotation then the Sox are in a lot of trouble.  Buchholz was done after 5 innings and Craig Breslow took the mound in the 6th.  Breslow had struggled himself as of late and he would end up giving the lead to the Yankees with the first batter he faced.  Brett Gardner hit a leadoff homerun to right to have the Yankees ahead 8-7.  Once the Yankees took the lead the Sox bats went cold and weren’t able to get anything going against the Yanks bullpen.  Tazawa pitched a scoreless 7th, Mujica a scoreless 8th and Uehara a scoreless 9th, but it wouldn’t end up meaning much as the Sox would lose the game and the series.
