The Red Sox came into the rubber game of the series just hours after finishing their marathon 19 inning game. The Sox had Rubby De La Rosa on the mound and hoped he could bring them a win and the series. Daniel Butler would be making his major league debut at catcher and would be behind the dish as De La Rosa pitched well enough to save the bullpen and bring the team the win they needed.
Both starters kept the bats off the scoreboard for most of the game. De La Rosa kept pitching himself into trouble and then pitching himself right out of it. The game was still scoreless heading into the 8th inning and that is when the Sox bats finally broke through. Holt got on by way of an error, Pedroia hit a single and then Cespedes hit a 3 run homerun to give the Sox the lead. That was Cespedes’ first homerun in a Sox uniform and it came at a perfect time. Sox 3-0. De La Rosa took the mound in the 8th and was now looking to protect a lead. De La Rosa would end up giving up a lead off homerun to Mike Trout and Farrell went out to get him. Sox 3-1. De La Rosa did what was asked of him and then some though. He was able to keep putting up scoreless innings and go deep in the game, which was definitely needed after using the whole bullpen in the 19 inning game the night before. De La Rosa’s pitching line was 110 pitches, 7+ IP, 5 H, 1 R, 3 BB and 8 Ks.
Edward Mujica came out to finish off the 8th inning and was able to retire all 3 batters in order. The 9th inning would belong to closer Koji Uehara. Koji allowed a single to Navarro to bring the tying run to the plate, but that wouldn’t be a problem for Koji. He retired the next two batters to secure his 25th save and the win.
Red Sox 3 Angels 1 BOXSCORE
WP: De La Rosa (4-4) LP: Smith (4-1) SV: Uehara (25)
