The Red Sox got out to early 3 run lead and the Angels unfortunately lost their starting pitcher Garrett Richards to a freak knee injury, however the Sox were still unable to capitalize and lost another game to the Angels. The wheels came off big time for Buchholz in the 5th inning and the Sox were never able to recover.
The Sox scored a single run in each of the first 3 innings, but unfortunately it would be the last time anyone in a Sox uniform would cross the plate. In the 1st Cespedes hit a sac fly to score Pedey, in the 2nd Ross hit an RBI single to score Johnson and in the 3rd Ortiz hit his 30th homerun of the season. Sox 3-0. The most dramatic and horrible thing happened in the 2nd inning though when Angels starter Garrett Richards went to cover the bag at 1st base and his left knee just buckled out from under him. The stretcher had to come out and he was carted off the field. It looked pretty horrible and I’ll be wishing and praying that the injury isn’t as serious as it looked.
With their starter out in the 2nd inning, it looked like the Sox were primed to coast to victory, however Clay Buchholz wouldn’t end up holding up his side of the bargain. Buchholz gave up the first Angels run in the 4th inning when he gave up an RBI single to Kendrick to score Hamilton. Sox 3-1. However it was the 5th inning where everything went downhill and fast for Buchholz and the Sox. Buchholz had the bases loaded with no outs and looked absolutely frazzled on the mound. Buchholz then walked in a run to have the Sox clinging to a 1 run lead. The Angels tied the game when Trout hit a bloop into right that ended up being a forceout at 2nd base. The Angels were then able to take the lead and score 3 more times in the inning. Pujols hit an RBI single, Hamilton hit an RBI sac fly and then Kendrick hit an RBI single. Sox 3-6. That inning went from bad to worse to epic meltdown when it came to Buchholz. Buchholz pitched another inning and then Burke Badenhop came in to for the 7th. Badenhop gave up a run in the inning when Hamilton hit an RBI sac fly to right to score Calhoun. Sox 3-7. Edward Mujica pitched a scoreless 8th inning and then Craig Breslow took the mound in the 9th. With the Sox down 4 runs it didn’t matter much, but Breslow continued his struggles on the mound. Breslow allowed an RBI single from Hamilton to score Cowgill from 3rd. Josh Hamilton has struggled something fierce this season, but you wouldn’t know it if you just looked at the boxscore from this game. The Sox scored early, but once they got behind they weren’t able to get anything else going on. Another loss in the column for the Sox in the 2014 season.
