The Red Sox took to the mound on Sunday in hopes of grabbing the final game and therefore the series against the Rays. The Sox had rookie Rubby De La Rosa on the mound vs. Drew Smyly who the Rays had gotten via trade for David Price. De La Rosa had one rough inning, the Sox were able to tie it up in the late innings, head into extras and then lose by way of the walk off in the 10th. The Sox split the series in a game that was very winnable. And yes, it was a one run game.
The Sox cracked the scoreboard first when Mookie Betts hit an RBI double in the 3rd inning to score Christian Vazquez. The Sox weren’t able to hold on to the lead for long though as De La Rosa gave it right back in the bottom of the inning. The Rays tied up the game when Wil Myers hit an RBI double and then took the lead when Longoria hit a 2 run RBI single. Sox 1-3. Mike Napoli got the Sox within a run again when he hit a solo homerun in the top of the 4th.
De La Rosa took the mound in the 6th and after getting an out he was pulled in favor of Tommy Layne. Layne got the 2 outs he needed and the Sox were on to the 7th inning. Tazawa pitched a scoreless 7th and then the Sox were able to tie it up in the bottom of the inning. Mookie Betts got on with a single, moved to 2nd and then Cespedes got him home by way of an RBI single. Sox 3-3. Edward Mujica pitched a scoreless 8th and Breslow pitched a scoreless 9th to send the game to extras.
In the top of the 10th Vazquez got on with a single and then the newly acquired Jemile Weeks came in to run for him. Weeks got picked off at 1st base and that ended his first time in a game in a Sox uniform with a sour note. In the bottom of the inning Burke Badenhop took the mound and ended up allowing the game winning, go ahead run. Rodriguez hit a leadoff double, Kiermaier was intentionally walked, Zobrist sacrificed them over to 2nd and 3rd base, Myers was also intentionally walked and then Joyce hit an RBI single to score Rodriguez and get the walk off win.
