Sox Swept Away by Pirates With 9th Inning Blunder

The Red Sox came into Pittsburgh and left without getting a single win.  The Sox took to the mound for the 3rd game with Brandon Workman on the mound and he put the Sox in a hole early and then the Sox almost rallied in the 9th, but a bone headed baserunning error by Jemile Weeks would end up being the Sox’s undoing.  The Sox got swept by the Pirates, a team who is still very much in the post season hunt.

Pittsburgh got on the scoreboard in the 1st inning when the bases were loaded against Brandon Workman and he ended up walking in a run.  Sox 0-1.  The Sox were able to tie it up in the 3rd when Mookie Betts hit an RBI single to score Vazquez, however the tie wouldn’t last long as the Pirates went ahead again in the 4th inning.  Workman gave up an RBI single to Stewart to put the Pirates back in front.  The Pirates then got an insurance run in the 5th when Workman gave up  a solo homerun to Marte.  Sox 1-3.

Workman was done after 5 innings and was on his way to his 10th loss of the season.  Alex Wilson pitched a scoreless 6th, Junichi Tazawa pitched a scoreless 7th and Drake Britton pitched a scoreless 8th.  The Sox would get back within a run in the 8th when Bogaerts hit a sac fly to score Vazquez.  Sox 2-3.  The Sox had something going in the 9th, but wouldn’t be able to get the job done.  The Sox had runners at 1st and 3rd with no outs and looked primed to at least tie the game.  Unfortunately Middlebrooks hit a ball down the 3rd base line and it hit Jemile Weeks in fair territory and he was called out.  Any player in the major leagues should know to be standing in foul territory off 3rd base, but Weeks wasn’t so he was out.  The Pirates closer Melancon then retired the next 2 Sox batters in order for the win and the sweep.

Red Sox 2  Pirates 3  BOXSCORE
