The Red Sox and the Yankees headed into the final 3 games knowing they would not see October baseball. Both teams probably had less major league players than they would if it were a spring training game. The Sox had knuckleballer Steven Wright on the mound vs. former Sox Chris Capuano for the Yankees.
The Red Sox cracked the scoreboard first when Capuano gave up an RBI single to Bryce Brentz in the 2nd. Sox 1-0. The Sox weren’t able to keep the lead long though as Dan Butler had some issues catching the knuckleball and Wright allowed two unearned runs to score as a result. Perez got on when Wright struck him out, but he reached. Perez then got to 2nd by way of a passed ball and scored when Cervelli hit an RBI single. Sox 1-1. The Yankees took the lead Murphy hit into a groundout and Betts threw the ball away and Cervelli scored from 3rd. Sox 1-2.
Wright pitched 5 strong innings and then handed the ball over to rookie Matt Barnes. Barnes had a little bit of trouble out of the gate allowing the Yankees to score their 3rd run of the game by way of a sac fly from Wheeler. Sox 1-3. Barnes pitched a scoreless 7th inning and then the Sox got one of those runs back when Rusney Castillo hit a solo homerun to the Monster. Sox 2-3. Castillo has shown a lot of the skills in the last week of the season that the Sox are banking on. Heath Hembree came out and pitched a scorless 8th and 9th inning, but the home team would fall 2-3 to the Yankees.
