Beanie Wells update, current and historical

The latest news is that Jim Tressel is saying Beanie Wells will not play against Ohio U on Saturday. Good.  We need him 100% against USC, and we don’t need him at all against OU.

He’s supposedly practicing in a limited capacity and the Buckeyes seem to be holding him back a lot more than Beanie wants them to.  Tressel’s being cautious, and that’s a good thing.

It’s OK, Beanie.  Go ahead and sit this one out.  Boom Herron, Brandon Saine and Maurice Wells are all capable, and they will get a lot more experience as a result.  Think about it….this will make them even more ready to give you the support you need when we head into Los Angeles.

But when you return, you’ve got a little piece of history to make.

Beanie Wells started the season as #16 of Ohio State’s all-time rushing leaders.  He’s still at #16 today with a total of 2,296 yards.

With 12 more yards, he will be at #15, surpassing the great Pete Johnson.  From there, he’ll climb the charts on a regular basis.  Here’s what he’s facing as he carries the ball throughout the season;

Ranking Player Yards needed Total yards
15 Pete Johnson 12 2,308
14 Lydell Ross 43 2,339
13 Jonathan Wells 85 2,381
12 Howard Cassady 170 2,466
11 Jim Otis 246 2,542
10 Calvin Murray 280 2,576
9 Raymont Harris 353 2,649

Even with Beanie sitting out this weekend, it’s possible that he could be in the top 9 by the end of the Minnesota game.  Then it’s a bit of a climb before he gets to dive further into history

8 Antonio Pittman 649 2,945
7 Michael Wiley 655 2,951
6 Carlos Snow 678 2,974
5 Pepe Pearson 825 3,121
4 Keith Byars 904 3,200

With a below-average season (by Beanie Wells-standards), he’ll be at #4 ahead of Byars.  But can he climb higher with a good season?  Yes.

3 Tim Spencer 1,207 3,553
2 Eddie George 1,472 3,768

If he manages to match his total rushing yards from his sophomore season, he’ll finish 2008 as the #2 rushing leader off all-time at Ohio State.

Then maybe, just maybe he can go for gold.

1 Archie Griffin 3,233 5,529

Hey, we can dream, can’t we?
