The BBC Challenge – Week 2 goes to the Pac-10

We’ve now completed two weeks of our BBC Challenge, pitting the best NFL players from the Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10 and SEC conferences.

The entire league, including rosters, can be found here.

If the first two weeks show us a good microcosm of what the season will bring, then we can look forward to a horse race between the Big Ten and the Pac-10.

Week 2 goes to the Pac-10, thanks to some solid play at WR from both squads.  Chad Ochocinco (Oregon State), DeSean Jackson (Oregon), and Steve Smith (USC) combined for 326 yards receiving and 3 touchdowns.  Their 51 points combined gave them a close win over the Big Ten.  Here’s the point totals for the league in Week 2;

Pac 10 team #1 78
Pac 10 team #2 99
Total Pac 10 points 177
Big Ten team #1 103
Big Ten team #2 66
Total Big Ten points 169
SEC team #1 75
SEC team #2 65
Total SEC points 140
Big 12 team #1 47
Big 12 team #2 42
Total Big 12 points 89

The Big Ten nearly stole this one away from the Pac-10.  With 22 seconds left in Monday night’s game, Ted Ginn Jr put both hands on what should have been a 42-yard TD, but it was batted away before he could pull it in.  That would have boosted Ginn’s total by 10 points and the Big Ten would have won it.  Oh, well.

The league’s top scorer was Big Ten Team #1, Thanks to Drew Brees (Purdue), Marion Barber (Minnesota), and Dallas Clark (Iowa).  Brees threw for 311 yards and 3 TDs, Barber had 124 yards rushing and a TD (plus 31 yards receiving), and Clark had 184 yards and a TD on just 7 catches.

Here’s the total standings after two weeks of action;

Week 1 Week 2 TOTAL
Pac 10 team #1 61 78 139
Pac 10 team #2 82 99 181
Total Pac 10 points 143 177
320
Big Ten team #1 78 103 181
Big Ten team #2 69 66 135
Total Big Ten points 147 169
316
SEC team #1 62 75 137
SEC team #2 70 65 135
Total SEC points 132 140
272
Big 12 team #1 86 47 133
Big 12 team #2 48 42 90
Total Big 12 points 134 89
223

As you can see, it’s not close for the SEC or Big 12.  The SEC is weakened by their ground game, and the Big 12 is being killed because they have no starting QBs in the entire NFL (compare Sage Rosenfels and Vince Young’s stats to that of Drew Brees and Tom Brady.  Come back when you’re done laughing)

Now that we have two weeks worth of stats to look over, we’ll see if any roster substitutions need to be made.  Feel free to offer up any suggestions!
