One thing is certain: The Blues know who their #1 goalie is coming into 2009-10. Chris Mason held the Blues together and proved his durability in goal through the second half of last season and finished the year with a solid 2.41 GAA and a save percentage of .916%.

However, the Blues can not expect Mason to play in every game as he seemingly did in the entire second half in 2008-09. Currently, the #2 keeper for the Blues is Ben Bishop. I am a big fan of the potential Bishop brings, but the question has already been asked as to whether the Blues want to hand the backup job to a player with only three starts under his belt. Bishop made six appearances last season, three being starts, and finished with a 2.94 GAA and a .893% save percentage.

Speculation is growing that the Blues might look to add a more battle tested goalie to their ranks to serve as Mason’s backup. Bishop might serve well as a netminder in the NHL, however it is tough to see a young player with as little experience as he has flourish in a part-time role.

The Blues appear primed to make at least one or two moves this summer, one likely being an addition to their offense and one possibly to shore up the defense. I would not rule out a small move to acquire a veteran netminder to serve as Mason’s backup in 2009-10.
