Austin's already winning the Rivers vs. Rivers matchupDoc’s a proud papa, and a great guy, but don’t be fooled by his smile and outgoing personality…  he’s a competitive S.O.B. So when the Celtics face the New Orleans Hornets in January, he’s not going to go easy on Austin just because that’s his son out there.  But he’s going to have a few less fans backing him up for it.

“I don’t think about it a lot unless someone asks and I have to prepare myself for it, to be honest,” Doc said. “The only thing I know, at least in my household, is no one will be cheering for me. That’ll be a first.

“I was laughing when I went home. It was New Orleans gear all over the place. What the heck’s going on in here? My sons are wearing it. My wife has a hat on. So they kind of jumped ship quick.

“That’s OK. I want to win. I’m not going to let that dude win, that’s not going to happen.”

I’m going to enjoy the good-natured rivalry that grows out of this.  Every Dad wants to raise his kids to be the best they can be… but I know just about every Dad out there still wants to have that one thing on their boys.  The “yeah, I’ve raised you to be pretty damn good, but remember, I’M still the master.”

There’ll be a day when Austin beats a Doc-coached team.  It might be this year… it might be 10 years from now… but it will probably happen.  And that day, Doc will be pissed, but partly pleased (as long as it’s only an early regular season game).

I still love the competitiveness, though.  “I’m not going to let that dude win”…. that’s pretty great.
