Blowing a Lead to End 2009
Bring on 2010. Let’s hope it brings a bit more happiness for Blues fans and season ticket holders. 2009 went out with a whimper on home ice, with the team tossing aside a three goal lead before eventually losing in OT. The obvious New Year’s resolution for the Blues entering the New Year: Win a game at home. Close out a lead, and get two points for your home fans. You times are bad when you can count on the broadcast to show the fan’s blank faces when the lead is eventually turned over.
Steen scored yet again, and along with Tkachuk and McDonald gave the Blues a commanding 3-0 lead before Vancouver answered very late in the second period. The third period was once again a disaster for the team as the Canucks scored twice, with the equalizing goal coming with just about two minutes left to play. If you’re sick of reading this same story you can believe me when I say I’m sick of writing about the Blues blowing another game with under a few minutes to play. It boggles the mind how a team can have so many games given away with under three minutes to play.
The extra period began and Brad Boyes was given a four-minute high sticking penalty which meant disaster for the Blues. Vancouver won the game midway through OT, and it was a third loss out of three from the Blues on their four game home stand. With Chicago coming to town Saturday, this could be an ugly, ugly stand at home.
So Happy New Year everyone! Sorry we are unable to bring you a more uplifting story and account of last night’s game. One thing is clear however. With this loss and miserable home stand, it seems to me that big news involving the Blues creeps closer and closer. Honestly, how long can the front office stand pat when fans are seeing loss after loss at home? Let’s not kid ourselves, tickets are far from cheap but the Blues continue to sell out games. This trend will not continue given all the disappointing performances and blown leads.
We all know the Blues New Year’s Resolution: Win at home. For FrozenNotes, it’s to continue bringing you thoughts, news and analysis on all things related to our favorite team. Happy New Year everyone!
