Report: C’s-Nets in blockbuster Pierce/KG talks

Pierce and Garnett

Get a load of this bomb from Adrian Wojnarowski:

The Brooklyn Nets are pursuing a blockbuster deal with the Boston Celtics to acquire future Hall of Famers Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Nets have discussed a possible deal to land Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett.

The talks are centering around a package that would include Gerald Wallace, Tomike Shengelia, the expiring deal of Kris Humphries and three future first-round picks, sources told Y! Sports.

Garnett has yet to be approached about waiving his no-trade clause, sources said, but there’s a belief that he could be convinced of agreeing to a deal should the Celtics and Nets be able to reach an agreement on terms. No deal is imminent.

For the Celtics, the chance to clear cap space and gain multiple future draft picks to start the franchise’s rebuilding process would be the lure.

Holy crap.

The Celtics would save about $5 million on this transaction this season if these are, indeed, the players involved. They’d get, I assume, a back-up SF in Gerald Wallace who is under contract for 3 more seasons at $30.3 million. Humphries’ deal is $12 mil. next season and he’s gone.  I don’t know anything about the other guy.  And then there are the picks, which would give the C’s four additional first rounders in this nuclear rebuild. The only question is when they’d be available, and what protections would be attached.

Atlanta has the right to swap picks with Brooklyn next season, so that can’t be traded.  The “Stepien rule” also does not allow for the trading of first rounders in consecutive years.  So we’re looking at really “future” number ones, the third of which might not come until Jared Sullinger is contemplating retirement.

So color me “meh” right now on this.  I like Wallace and think he’d bring some nice stability to this team…. provided he could regain the confidence he so obviously lost last season.  The rest?

Meh.
