BOSTON – The Boston Celtics announced today that they have waived guard/forward Terrence Williams.
Williams, a 6’6” guard/forward, appeared in 24 games for the Celtics during the 2012-13 season and averaged 4.6 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 13.3 minutes per game. He also appeared in five games for the Celtics during the playoffs and averaged 1.0 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 9.6 minutes per game.
Well, this explains why he wasn’t on the Summer League roster.
$200,000 of Williams’ nearly million dollar salary for this upcoming season would have been guaranteed if he remained on the roster beyond June 30th, so this was a purely financial move.
There was a thought for a while that Williams could become a viable back up for Rajon Rondo, but his legal troubles threw that into question. Then, with the departure of Doc Rivers and subsequent blockbuster trade that will send Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Jason Terry to Brooklyn, the Celtics have clearly moved into a cost-savings mode. As I outlined yesterday, the Celtics are very likely to try to avoid paying any taxes this season, so moves like this are not surprising.
The other non-guaranteed contracts of Shavlik Randolph and DJ White will not become guaranteed until August 1, so it’s not clear if the Celtics will hold on to them for that amount of time or release them earlier so they have a chance to audition for other teams in the Orlando or Las Vegas summer leagues. Of course, the Celtics could just hold on to one or both, thus guaranteeing their contracts. They could each also be used in a July trade as waive-able salary-ballast to make a deal work financially, but would allow the other team to immediately waive them and save money.
The summer is only just getting under way, so there’s a lot more that will happen.
