Throwback Thursday: “The Wheelchair Incident”

Lakers fans and Paul Pierce haters can joke all they want about the “wheelchair incident“. But for Celtics fans, it’s become a memorable moment in the career of one of Boston’s most prolific scorers.

With a little less than 7 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter of Game 1 of the 2008 NBA Finals, Pierce was inadvertently sideswiped by teammate Kendrick Perkins. Paul’s leg buckled a bit, and he fell to the floor writhing in pain. He had to be carried off the parquet, and Celtics fans feared the worse. Dr. Brian McKeon got him off his feet, and into a wheelchair for precautionary reasons. A short time later, Pierce miraculously emerged from the Celtics’ tunnel, to thunderous applause. And the rest as they say is history. Behind 22 pts from Paul & another 24 from KG, the Celtics went on to win 98-88 and take a 1-0 lead in the series. Boston would win the Finals in six games-the clincher being a 131-92 thrashing of Kobe and the Lakers.

Our friend RD6 uploaded highlights of this memorable game the other day. Enjoy:
