Throwback Thursday: C’s shock Bulls on Opening Night

It was Opening Night of the 1997-98 season. The Celtics and Bulls were at opposite ends of the spectrum. The C’s were coming off a dismal 15-67 season, with hopes that new coach Rick Pitino could inject some life into a comatose franchise. The Chicago Bulls on the other hand were riding high. Four months earlier, they beat the Utah Jazz to win their second straight NBA title, & were heavy favorites to “three-peat”.

The Celtics gave all 18,000+ fans in attendance that night reason to feel hopeful. Behind 31 points from Antoine Walker, they beat the Bulls 92-85. Rookie Chauncey Billups was stellar in his NBA debut. He dropped 15 points in 17 minutes off the bench. Check out Employee Number Eight’s complete highlights from that night via Sina Video.
