Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.
In three games this month since returning from a toe sprain, Olynyk is averaging 16.7 points, 6 rebounds and 1.7 assists over a mere 20.7 minutes per game. He’s shooting 58.6 percent from the floor and teaming with Jared Sullinger to power Boston’s second unit.
Kelly Olynyk Looking Sharp Of Late-Chris Forsberg
Kelly Olynyk turned a lot of heads at NBA Summer League in Orlando. He drew comparisons to some great NBA players and wowed fans & media with his combination of shooting and passing. Then he started to come back down to earth a bit as the season started. He’s gone through his struggles and has had some less than memorable moments. But such is the first year of an up and coming NBA player. It will take Kelly time to adjust to the speed of the NBA game, as well as the sheer size & strength of his opponents.
“I think it’s a little bit of everything, just settling down, getting comfortable, getting that mindset, attacking,” Olynyk said. “And just realizing that that’s what I need to do to help the team and help that second unit.”
As of late, Olynyk’s play has been fantastic. Over his last five games, Olynyk has averaged 16.7 points and 6 rebounds, and is shooting over 60% from three. He has helped the Celtics’ second unit immensely. But when he’s really at his best is when he’s paired with Jared Sullinger. As Forsberg notes in his article, when Sully & Kelly are on the floor together, the team’s offensive rating is 4.5 points higher. Olynyk’s perimeter game and Sully’s bruising inside presence compliment each other well. They are also building a solid relationship and it’s obvious Olynyk looks up to Sullinger and has the utmost respect for him.
“Jared can really pass the ball,” Olynyk said. “He’s got a great IQ. He’s a great guy to play with because he can shoot the ball as well, space the floor. Stuff just opens up when he’s on the floor. We played a lot together at the beginning of the year as well. He’s a great guy to have.”
It’s going to be interesting to see what the future holds for Kelly. With the season coming to a close, it won’t be long before Danny starts wheeling and dealing. Where does Kelly fit in as far as the Celtics’ future is concerned? Will he become a regular part of the second unit, or spend more time on the bench once other “pieces” are brought in? I personally think Olynyk has a lot of potential, and I’d like to see him really hit the weights this summer and get some strength training in. I feel that a few more pounds of muscle on this kid would really benefit him. Are you listening Bryan Doo…?
