“The truthful answer is I really don’t know,” Ainge insisted. “I have no intention. I’m not trying to trade Rondo, but because he’s a free agent this summer, he assured me that he wants to stay in Boston. We’d love to keep him in Boston.”
Ainge said he tried to negotiate a contract extension with Rondo this and last summer, but he admitted that it makes more financial sense for Rondo to not agree to a new contract until he becomes an unrestricted free agent. Rondo, 28, will receive a team-high $12.9 million this coming season in the final year of his contract.
“The possibility of a trade is not out of the question,” Ainge said. “Nobody is untradeable, but I don’t see that happening.”

This is classic Danny Ainge, and this doesn’t represent any sort of actual departure from his stance on Rondo, or anyone.
I like the guy, I want him here, he says he wants to stay, so we’ll try. But if something comes up that makes more sense, I gotta do it.
You can pull “Rondo” out of the piece and replace with “Paul Pierce” and you tell me if the tone is any different from what we saw unfold last summer.
If you take everyone at somewhat face value, you’ll see that Rondo would prefer to stay in Boston and the Celtics would prefer to keep him. But both sides are understandably keeping their options open. The deal breaker could be money (“I wanted to stay in Boston but I got more money somewhere else” … “we wanted to keep Rondo, but we couldn’t match what others were willing to pay”) or something else that comes up this season. But at this point in time, what Ainge is saying makes total sense. It’s a classic non-committal commitment.
