REGISTRATION CLOSED – Due to interest through Twitter, Frozen Notes will be running a fantasy hockey league for the 2011-12 season. If you want to join in on the fun, leave a comment below stating your interest and the best way to reach you whether through Twitter or email so that league info can be sent out.

League Info

The league will be between 10-14 managers depending on the amount of interest received. We won’t run one with fewer than 10 folks and we won’t run one with more than 14 managers, so get your “RSVP” in early.

The league will be run over at Yahoo! Sports. If you aren’t familiar with how things work over there, it is extremely easy to figure out and has plenty of nice and, more importantly, free features.

There’s no cost to join in on the fun.

League Settings / Rules

I like to keep things relatively simple for newcomers yet also challenging for those that have played before. That being said, below is a list of what the rosters will look like along with what the scoring settings and rules will be.

Four defenseman and two players at each position, including goaltenders, will make up your starting lineup. There are then six bench positions that can be any mix of different positions that you can use to fill out your lineup if someone gets hurt, etc. Finally, two IR spots to use if a player suffers an injury. If you place a player here, you can then pick up a new one from the free agent pool.

To keep things fair, you will only be allowed to make four free agent acquisitions each week. This prevents someone from dropping mediocre players that don’t have a game that night just to add a new one that is playing, effectively cheating the system.

Roster changes will be made daily. You can set your lineup each and every day. More user interactivity the better.

Scoring:
While I’ve played every style of fantasy hockey (I used to work for a fantasy sports company), I’ve found the head-to-head format is the easiest for newcomers and the most fun for active managers that enjoy rivalry.

In head-to-head, you match up against one manager each week. Each scoring category is considered a win. If you have more goals than your opponent, you “win” that category and have a 1-0-0 record. If there are 12 categories, you might go 7-4-1 in a given week.

The scoring categories may be tweaked some, but currently I’m planning to use:

Skaters
Goals
Assists
Points
Plus/Minus
Penalty Minutes
Shots on Goal

Goaltenders
Wins
Losses
GAA
SV%
Shutouts

These statistics will definitely be included, though you may see an additional one or two categories added before the draft.

Draft

The draft will be held online through Yahoo!’s system and will likely occur on a Sunday before the regular seasons gets underway. More info to come on this soon.

Prize

Currently the prize has yet to be decided, but I’d like to do something to reward the eventual winner. Similar to the 1k Twitter contest, the prize won’t be anything massive or expensive, so keep your expectations in check.

Who Should Play

I’m hoping to build a league full of knowledgeable hockey fans that know a great deal about not only their St. Louis Blues, but the NHL as a whole. You love to compete and are willing to commit to a league that you might have to check each day to set your lineup. Lineups can be set several days in advance and might just take you 5-10 minutes, so don’t let this scare you way.

If you think you will lose interest midway through the season, please don’t bother signing up. I’d like to get a fun, competitive league with plenty of banter and trash talk. If that sounds good to you, leave a comment below.
