Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.
The Celtics scored 29 points down the stretch, and that trio scored or assisted all of them, pulling the C’s within one with 39 seconds left after trailing by 31 points at one point in the game. Bradley scored 14 of his career-high 32 points during the run, Rondo collected six of his 15 assists and Smart submitted highlight after highlight in what can only be described as atomic excitation.
It was all thrilling basketball, and a sure sign Stevens will experiment further with this trio.
In the midst of the Celtics’ chaotic fight back from a 31-point deficit in Dallas Monday night, Brad Stevens was desperate to find any type of effective combination.
What he found was magic.
It was the trio of Marcus Smart, Avery Bradley, and Rajon Rondo harassing the Mavericks in the fourth quarter, forcing seven turnovers, and slicing the deficit to 1 in the final minute. The Celtics lost, 118-113, but the early part of the season will be spent finding effective rotations, a necessary trial-and-error period because the roster is so evenly balanced.
Globe: Celtics find some magic during Dallas rally
The Rondo-Bradley-Smart triumvirate certainly had an impact on Boston’s near comeback Monday night. But don’t anticipate the Celtics doing anything radical such as starting the trio or going to it more often; at least not immediately.
[…] “We just gotta work at it,” Boston’s Jeff Green said of the smaller, three-guard lineup that often has him at power forward. “We will continue to be confident in that lineup and find ways to exploit other team’s defense; so whatever works.”Rondo is a big fan of the three-guard lineup, but he knows it’s too soon to put a lot of stock into one particular lineup.
“It’s only the third game,” Rondo said. “We’re trying different wrinkles with our defense and offense as well. Each game varies.”
CSNNE: Three-guard lineup passes first test
Ok, let me just get the obvious question out of the way first… yes, that’s an actual photo of me (why yes, I HAVE been working out) and a 3-headed Cerberus I bought after the Dallas game. I’m sinking all of my Red’s Army shares into the Cerberus becoming the nickname for this 3-guard lineup… so I’m all in on this.
I mentioned Marcus Smart as the linchpin on this lineup yesterday. Smart seems to be the perfect middle-ground between Avery Bradley and Rajon Rondo. Not quite the big scorer Avery Bradley’s been so far, not quite the floor general that Rondo is, but somewhere in the middle where he can do a little of both while still being hellish on D. Meanwhile, Bradley can still hound guards full or 3/4 court to really ramp up the D, and then Rondo can swoop in like shark through choppy seas and find his target.
There are definite risks that are taken in this lineup though. NBA point guards will still be able to get past the Bradley/Smart first wave. If the opposing team has a bunch of shooters on the floor, even a brief 5-on-4 situation could lead to breakdown after just a couple of passes. The Celtics don’t have the frontcourt to really make up the difference in a lot of these situations.
That means the Celtics probably can’t trot the Cerberus out for long stretches against certain matchups. For now, we have to look at this like sort of turbo button or special move that they use for quick bursts of mayhem.
However it pans out, it’s THE topic of discussion right now… which I find a little odd since so few people wanted to listen when I had said Smart could be part of a 3-guard rotation. In today’s NBA where positions matter less, and with Smart and Bradley’s ability to guard multiple positions, there was never a reason to dismiss today’s topic as a possibility.

Page 2: Tanguay and I will finally settle the score
By now you know that Gary Tanguay has had an issue with Red’s Army and our believe that Rajon Rondo is not the coach-killing, mind-polluting asshole that he says Rondo is. Yesterday, after I noted on Twitter how he’s dismissed Red’s Army, myself, and the work done here as just some “fan site”… he called me out on TV (again).
So it’s time that we squared off 1-on-1.
Tell you what @Gary_Tanguay … Let’s talk this out. Why don’t you join me on a podcast for an honest, healthy debate on Rondo?

So there it is.
Sunday night. 9 p.m. Gary Tanguay will join me on a podcast for a debate on Rajon Rondo… who, oh by the way, happens to be having an historic start to the season (I know Gary… it’s great cuz it ups his trade value, right?) I don’t want to oversell it, but it’ll be the greatest podcast in the history of the world. Grab ya popcorn.
