The St. Louis Blues have punched their ticket to the 2013 playoffs thanks to a 3-1 win against the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night. While the team's playoff seed is still yet to be determined, the Blues are mathematically guaranteed to be among the top eight teams in the West when the season concludes.
The team needed just one point to clinch a spot, but delivered two on home ice against the Avs.
Though a spot is wrapped up, the Blues still have plenty to play for before the regular season closes. The Blues are still contending for either the fourth or the fifth seed in the West. A fourth seed would give the Blues valuable home ice advantage in the first round.
Who will the Blues face in the first round? That's yet to be decided, but it appears it will either be Vancouver, San Jose or Los Angeles. A different team might rise or fall in the ranks and end up squaring off with the Blues, but for now the likely opponent will probably come out of that trio. In other words, get ready to stay up late because odds are good that the Blues will be out on the West coast for the first round.
The guarantee of being in the playoffs must feel the best for Jay Bouwmeester as he has yet to skate in a postseason game despite suiting up in 762 NHL games.
