Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big story line. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.
The Celtics’ success on the second night of a back-to-back ending on the road is downright absurd at this point. Typically one of the most challenging games for all 29 other NBA teams, Boston improved to 10-0 on the second nights of back-to-backs closing on the road since the All-Star break last season.
The Celtics are 3-0 in that situation this season, having posted wins in Houston, Miami and Charlotte. That’s against three teams with a combined winning percentage of .559 this season. Which is to say that none of those games have been gimmes. And yet the Celtics keep finding ways to pull them out.
Evan Turner told reporters in Charlotte that Boston’s record was “symbolic of our toughness.”
ESPN Boston: Road warriors have their own improbable streak
“We try to accept the challenge and come out and compete the best way they we can, and make the most out of our opportunity,” Evan Turner said after the game. “To not drop the ball, I think that says a lot about us as a team and our character. Some people mail it in if they’re tired. We step up and do what we need to do.”
CSNNE: Turner: Win “says a lot about us”
I said in the immediate aftermath of the double-OT loss to Golden State that both the Celtics and Warrior were going to lose last night. Turns out I was only half right.
The Warriors lost to the Bucks last night, ending their 24 game streak to open the season. That had to happen sometime, just like at some point, the Celtics are going to lose a road back-to-back… though that hasn’t happened in quite some time either.
No, it’s not the same… we all know that. But it doesn’t make 10 straight wins in that situation any less ridiculous on its own merits. Those are games that are tailor-made to lose.
Not only that, they’re tailor-made for mailing it in and collapsing. The Celtics came out last night with an effort that made sense after the heart breaker against the Dubs. But instead of rolling over after a bad first half, they came out with a huge effort in the second and did what they couldn’t the night before… close out a tight game.
Some of this is luck… if last night had been against a better opponent, then maybe the end of that game might have gone differently. But it wasn’t, and it didn’t, and the Celtics are showing a poise and maturity that gets them wins in those situations rather than losses.
They rarely have “quit” games… which is a great sign of unity and leadership in the locker room and by the coaches. This couldn’t be done without everyone on board with what’s being taught and preached by the coaches. It’s not 24 games in a row, but it’s still ridiculous and impressive… and it’s one of the greatest positive signs as this team continues to build for the future.

Page 2: Brad Stevens explains not calling time outs against Golden State
“Both times I wanted us to come in, slip out of a pick and roll, and just play,” said Stevens. “Because you let [the Warriors] get set, they’re so long, they switch things, they make it really difficult on you as you saw even in the side-outs. They’re very physical. And we had the ball with unique time, because all I would do is call something, get it in, and run the clock down.”
ESPN Boston: Stevens explains decision to skip time outs
A lot of people questioned the decisions to not take time outs late in the Warriors game, but I’m with Stevens on this one…
When you face a tough defensive team like Golden State, I like pushing it and calling a play rather than stopping the action and letting them rest, catch their breath, and set a defense. I know Brad Stevens is an after timeout master, but that doesn’t mean he has to micromanage every second of the game. He can let the guys play and try to gain an advantage by not letting those good defenses get prepared.
It’s the basketball equivalent of a no-huddle offense in football. You try to run an offense against a tired D with personnel that might work in your favor. It doesn’t always work, but it has and it will again.
