Your Morning Dump… Where the C’s are no longer embarrassing Brad

Miami Heat v Boston Celtics

Miami Heat v Boston Celtics

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big story line. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

“I remember one game Brad came in and talked to us about being embarrassing to our fans and an embarrassment to the loyalty of the organization, coming out and giving duds,” said Jae Crowder, who had 14 points and five steals in the 101-89 win. “I think that Laker game and then the next one against the Nets, that was a tough run for us. We just wanted to take one game at a time and get out of that.”

It’s easy to forget now, but once upon a time this season, the Boston Celtics had a losing record at home. The last time the Celtics lost on the Parquet was January 6 to Detroit. It followed home losses to the Lakers and Nets, and was a very low point for the Celtics.

But since then, a few things have happened.

A: Guys got healthy. Avery Bradley missed the last home loss and Marcus Smart was only JUST coming back from his injury. Smart didn’t hit his full stride until about a couple of weeks later.

B: No more David Lee. We keep harping on this but Lee was still sniffing the rotation at that point of the season. He was Lee was relegated to the bench for good a little while after that last home loss (he’d get one more shot in Memphis… the now infamous 2-for-12 game).

And in this situation: A+B= C… Brad Stevens figured out some rotations that worked. With a mostly healthy team (minus Kelly Olynyk… more on him in a moment), Stevens has been able to finally find a formula that gives the team its best chance to win. The stability has paid off, and fans can feel better about going to those home games and then piling into Sully’s after to celebrate a win, rather than drink away their sorrows.

Page 2: Kelly Olynyk is getting better… slowly

“I would say it’s getting better slowly but surely,” Olynyk said before the Celtics’ 101-89 win over the Heat. “Like I said before, it’s tough with these things. They just come along slowly and then you hit a stride.”

Globe: Kelly Olynyk on mend, but return remains uncertain

Asked what he’s been able to do, Olynyk said: “Just trying to get [the shoulder] moving, get it strong, strengthen those muscles so it can support itself and it’s not going to get knocked around.”

[…] “It’s no fun,” said Olynyk. “If they’re out there winning then it’s fine, but taking a couple losses on that West Coast trip was tough. Sitting in the back to watch that where you know you can help and want to be out there helping, but you’ve just got to do what you can to get yourself back as quick as possible.”

The Celtics are doing OK without Olynyk. Not great, but they’re getting by. It’s pretty clear how important he can be to spreading the floor… but it’s also pretty clear the C’s coaching staff can find adjustments in the meantime.

The biggest issue for the Olynyk-less Celtics is when they face length. The C’s ran away from Miami yesterday, but it would have been pretty nice to have Olynyk out there to pull Whiteside away from the basket a little bit more. And against Utah or Minnesota, Olynyk might have been able to stretch the floor enough for the results to change.

And Finally…

Steph Curry is re-goddamn-diculous.

If you didn’t watch last night’s Thunder-Warriors game, you missed an epic game. It’ll be on NBATV plenty in the coming days. But all you really need to know is that Steph Curry’s 12th 3-pointer of the night was this buzzer beater to win the game.

That wasn’t some heave. That wasn’t a “well, here goes nothing” shot.

He measured his steps. He took that shot like he’d taken most of his other 3’s. That was just Steph being Steph.

There’s a growing hatred out there for all things Curry, probably because people like me can’t stop gushing about the kid. But every time he does something like this… it’s just too amazing not to enjoy.  That game was amazing, and that finish was out of this world.
