Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big story line. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.
The Sacramento Kings have scheduled an interview Sunday to meet face-to-face with the freshly available Dave Joerger, according to league sources, as the Kings ramp up the intensity of their coaching search.
Sources say that the Kings, who had been hoping to secure permission from the Memphis Grizzlies to pursue Joerger before the Grizzlies abruptly fired him Saturday, are fans of the 42-year-old and regard him as a serious candidate for the post.
Just what the Boogie to Boston crowd didn’t need to hear… an accomplished, respected NBA coach with experience in dealing with tough personalities actually WANTING to go to Sacramento and coach DeMarcus Cousins.
Joerger’s interest in the Kings radically changes the trade market landscape because the Kings has finally become amenable to trading Cousins. Boogie’s personality had grown to be too much of a problem for teammates and others in the organization… but suddenly the impending arrival of Joerger threatens to bring stability to this rudderless mess of team. And it is impending…
Dave Joerger’s meeting w/Kings Sun (@ESPNSteinLine 1st) seems mere formality. Sac wants to finish w/others but hearing 3/$12M on horizon.

In Memphis Joerger had gotten strong production from a hodgepodge of head-cases. He had Matt Barnes, Chris Andersen, AND Lance Stephenson on the roster (granted, not for very long, but still…) and he managed to get them all to work together well enough to be a really tough out in the playoffs despite losing their best players. They were playing Jordan Farmar big minutes and still Joerger got them to play well and hard enough where sleeping on them even for a little bit would lead to a loss.
So now he’s out of Memphis and almost certainly relishing the opportunity to reach deep into Boogie’s head and press the secret button that only Mike Malone had found to this point. The Kings, now prepared to spend market value on a really good coach who has specific thoughts for this roster, are now almost definitely going to give the Cousins-led Kings a solid chance to succeed under the right guidance.
However, this really is Boogie’s last shot. Up until now, it’s been obvious George Karl was going to lose that war of wills. With the whispers of blowing it up starting to leak in the past couple of weeks, and with an accomplished coach soon to be in place, it’s now completely on Cousins to open himself up and accept the coach’s direction.
If Cousins is still the same ol’ Boogie by the trade deadline, then things might go south in Sacto, and Vlade Divac could go on a full-fledged, strip-it-down-to-the-studs, gut renovation of the Kings, using Cousins as the bait for a big haul.
There’s a lot of time between now and then, and the Celtics might not have the patience to wait that out (or the desire to, really. Who’d REALLY want Cousins at that point?). For now, though, the Boogie-to-Boston contingent will have to accept reality. With Joerger on his way to California, Cousins is getting one last shot be the face of the Kings.
Page 2: RJ Hunter didn’t expect to come to Boston
“I didn’t interview with them,” Hunter said. “I actually canceled my workout with the Celtics. (President of basketball operations Danny) Ainge wasn’t too happy about that, but I was in Toronto and my body wasn’t feeling right. I just had a gut feeling not to go. I was at my boarding gate heading to Boston, and I called my agent and said, ‘I just need to go home for a little bit.’ I guess Danny wasn’t real happy, and my agent told me, ‘Well, you’re probably not going to go to Boston.’ I was like, ‘That’s a bullet I’ll probably have to bite.’
“So it’s crazy how it worked out. I was shocked the Celtics took me. When the pick came up, I just shut off. I was on my phone, and then the call came through. I was like, wow. But I enjoy Boston, man. I didn’t know it was this big of a city. We came to play Northeastern one year, so I saw one part of the town, but it’s a real low-key place. It’s a nice East Coast city. I like the people here. It’s a sports town.”

The workout/draft stories are always interesting. Guys drop out of workouts for various reasons and we all make our assumptions… sometimes a guy just doesn’t feel right.
Beyond the “I like playing here” thing I quoted, there’s a funny story in that piece that highlights Hunter’s personality. This is funny kid. Who can forget this moment from the season?
Hilarious.
I’m on record as being a Hunter fan. He needs a lot of work, for sure, but assuming he puts it in and gets better this summer, I’d like to see him get an increased role. I think good things happen when he’s on the floor.
And Finally….
Damian Lillard went nuts last night… dropping 40 to beat a Curry-less Golden State team.
The Dubs still lead the series 2-1… and Curry will be back soon.
