Your Morning Dump... Where we keep the Durant-to-Boston fantasy alive

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big story line. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

With good friend Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder one win away from a trip to the NBA Finals, New England Patriots defensive lineman Terrance Knighton has paused his attempts to coerce the former MVP to join the Boston Celtics this summer.

[…]While many have wondered whether Oklahoma City’s strong playoff showing has made it more likely that Durant will re-sign with the Thunder when he reaches free agency this summer, the 6-foot-3, 354-pound Knighton says he’s an expert at applying pressure.

ESPN Boston: Patriots’ Terrance Knighton ready to resume Kevin Durant recruitment to Celtics

I never really thought Kevin Durant was coming to Boston this summer. It still makes the most sense to sign a “1+1” deal to play one more year and then leave, potentially, NEXT summer when Russell Westbrook is a free agent.

BUT…

If the Thunder, now tied with Golden State at three games each after last night’s Game 6, blow what was once a 3-1 series lead, there is that thought that maybe, just maybe, Durant would want to get out of the West and find a way East to get a better road to the NBA Finals.

This is where I remind you of the headline where I specifically referred to this as a fantasy. There’s a reason for that. This is all no different to spending your Powerball winnings in your head before the numbers are picked. Yes, there is a CHANCE, but… really… nah.

But IF Terrance Knighton can plant the bug in KD’s ear, maybe Durant decides that picking off Cleveland as LeBron gets older (LeBron turns 32 next season. KD turns 28.) might be easier than having to go through that Western Conference gauntlet over and over again. And when you look at the Eastern landscape, Boston is more stable than Washington and in a better position to load up a championship roster than most other teams. So, should a frustrated Durant trudge out of Oracle tomorrow night a loser once again, he might be more open to listening to people like Terrance Knighton.

Eh.. probably not, but it’s fun to fantasize. And as long as OKC loses, then this fantasy will still live on.

Page 2: The Chief doesn’t live in the past

Parish said he has no issues with the Celtics organization but did reject the team’s offer to appear at the reunion. Kevin McHale, Bill Walton, Jerry Sichting, Sam Vincent, Danny Ainge, and Greg Kite were among the attendees.

“I just didn’t want to travel. It didn’t motivate me to attend,” said Parish, who averaged 16.1 points and 9.5 rebounds on that ’86 title team. “I don’t want to downplay the significance of what we accomplished as a team. That’s not what I’m trying to imply. The answer I gave you implies that I didn’t think it was important enough to show up, that’s not what I’m trying to convey. I’m just saying that that time has passed for me. I don’t dwell on the past and I’ve been honored and appreciated and I still get love for not only what myself but my teammates accomplished. I just didn’t feel like [the reunion] was that big of a deal, that’s all.”

When asked if he feels appreciated when he visits Boston, Parish was unwavering in his response.

“I always get love in Boston and I will never forget Boston,” said Parish, who played 14 of his 21 NBA seasons with the Celtics. “Boston has some of the best fans in any sport. They are very knowledgeable. They understand me. I was loved, embraced, and supported; what more can you ask for as an athlete?”

Globe: Robert Parish prefers to leave the glory behind

The Chief can do what he wants… though it’s always good to see him in Boston. Parish isn’t a glory hound, and so he turns down things like this from time to time. That’s just who he is.

Chief’s doing a lot of media lately, so this is a good time to remind some of you new readers that we had him on our Rainin’ J’s podcast earlier this year and he was awesome. Here it is if you’re interested.

And Finally…

Klay Thompson set an NBA record with 11 3’s last night. Here’s every single one of them.
