Former Fox 25 sportscaster and current WEEI fill-in host Butch Stearns claims to have some inside info on the Celtics pursuit of Kevin Durant (WEEI via NBC Sports):
I have this on pretty good authority. The Celtics have sat with his agent and other representatives of Durant. The Celtics do know — I don’t know who it is — but they do know who he would prefer to be brought here in a LeBron-Chris Bosh–Dwyane Wade-like way. Because that’s how it works in the NBA. You need to know who the guy or guys that that guy wants, which would be a factor.
Now, I don’t know if Durant’s told them that. But the Celtics know. They know. They’ve been told what group of guys he would want to come here.
While most expect Durant to re-sign a short term deal with OKC, it appears he’s at least going to play out the free agency process. And that’s all we need… a window.
I’m pretty sure Danny Ainge would sign or trade for just about anyone in order to get Durant’s signature on a contract. It’s been speculated that Al Horford is one of those guys. Now there’s a report the Hawks are (one of the many teams) going after KD as well:
The Hawks, led by owner Tony Ressler, are expected to make a strong push for Durant. A front line with Durant, Paul Millsap and Al Horford would make the Hawks an immediate title contender, regardless of what decisions they make in the backcourt with Jeff Teague and Dennis Schroder. But several teams — particularly Miami, Boston and San Antonio — will try to convince Durant that he’s the final piece to their title hopes. I’m not sure the Hawks are in any better position than those teams.
Is it July 1 yet?
