The St. Louis Blues aren’t in a rush to hire a new goaltending coach. After releasing Corey Hirsch, it was clear the Blues intended to go in a new direction, but it’s still unclear what kind of direction that may be. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Buffalo coach Jim Corsi, Nashville’s Mitch Korn and goalie development coach and former St. Louis netminder Ty Conklin are all potential candidates for the position.
The Blues hope to have a coach in place before the 2014 NHL Draft, but they’re aware that the goaltending coach picture is an evolving one in the NHL. Lots of teams are expected to make changes which may alter how the Blues handle filling the hole left behind by Hirsch.
Though the Blues appear to be linked to a few names already, there isn’t a clear favorite. For instance, Korn is still under contract with the Predators and while Conklin may make a lot of sense, he doesn’t have NHL coaching experience under his belt.
It’s worth noting that Hirsch was widely criticized after the Ryan Miller trade. Upon arriving in St. Louis Miller started playing a bit deeper in his net, a trait many blame on Hirsch. Still, Hirsch deserves some credit for his work with Brian Elliott. Now Elliott and Jake Allen will have to start a new relationship whenever the Blues reach a decision.
