You can add yet another name to the St. Louis Blues Rumor Mill. According to a statement made by Nick Kypreos on Hockey Central, the Toronto Maple Leafs have apparently spoken with the Blues about Patrik Berglund. The name floated back in return was Nazem Kadri.
The segment also mentioned Ryan Kesler and that the Vancouver Canucks would reportedly want T.J. Oshie in any deal involving Kesler.
Got all that? It’s a lot to digest and analyze, but here we go.
Let’s first sweep up that Kesler-Oshie nonsense. That trade isn’t going to happen. Oshie is the type of guy you only trade away if your organization is floundering or rebuilding, and that isn’t the case in St. Louis. It’s essentially Vancouver’s way of saying a deal just isn’t going to happen.
As for the Berglund-Kadri talk, that’s a lot more interesting. That’s a trade most Blues fans would make before you could even finish saying “Kadri.” The forward, Don Cherry’s favorite player, brings more to the table offensively and is three years younger than Berglund. While it’s safe to say we’ve seen Berglund at his best, Kadri may still have a bit more room to grow before he hits his ceiling. As is, the Kadri-Berglund rumor seems like it would have to involve at least one other moving part for it to be considered by the Leafs. Then again, there was the deal which brought Steen and Colaiacovo to St. Louis, so you just never know.
