Blues reach contract extension with Jaden Schwartz

The Jaden Schwartz contract drama is officially over. As the 2014-15 opener on October 9th looms ever closer, the Blues gave Schwartz a new two-year, $4.7 million deal which will keep him with the team through 2015-16. The new extension – one which we can definitely refer to as a bridge contract – will pay Schwartz $2 million this season and $2.7 million next year.

It’s nice to have this matter resolved. Though it appeared that the Blues and Schwartz weren’t worried about a deal getting done, fans were. After watching Vladimir Sobotka’s negotiations head south (and ultimately to Russia), there were going to be concerns Schwartz may drive a harder bargain or choose to jump ship.

This contract is ideal for both the Blues and Schwartz. For the club, they retain an asset for two seasons and avoid making a long-term, expensive commitment to a player who still has a pretty small NHL resume. For Schwartz, this leaves the door open for a much larger and longer contract should he prove worthy of one over the next two years.
