Why did this story drag on so long?
The news, which really wasn’t a surprise after countless reports suggested the same outcome, allows the Blues to move on and look for external options to improve the roster. Sobotka would have been welcomed back, but it’s important to remember that he wouldn’t have been the answer to the Blues’ problems. We already know what he brings to the table and though he would’ve been an upgrade over say a Steve Ott, he had opportunities to win with the team’s current core and came up empty.
Sobotka is a solid player, but he’s not the one missing piece the Blues are missing. This bizarre situation has artificially inflated his value and it’s important to remember what he has contributed in the past with a similar roster.
Unfortunately, this won’t be the end of this story. Until next summer when we’ll revisit this same narrative.
