The St. Louis Blues have a new series called Coaching Blueprint which offers a sneak peak at what happens behind closed doors inside the coaches meetings. The first episode just debuted and it offers a fascinating look at how Ken Hitchcock and his coaches are analyzing the new 3-on-3 OT hockey format.

The episode starts off with a fairly long intro, but there are some really interesting points made by Hitchcock and his team during this video.

Most hockey fans have focused on which personnel each team should use in overtime. As the video shows, that’s just one factor and maybe not even the biggest factor to consider. Line changes, including where the players who are being used in overtime are sitting on the bench, may be one of the most important points to figure out in the early going.

Hitchcock, often known as a defensive coach in his career, is eager to “go for it” when it comes to 3-on-3 OT hockey. The other coaches discuss how many players they want to use and the list is a pretty small one.

All in all, this is a great look at how the Blues are approaching the new format.
