Patrick Berglund is closing in on a return and has officially been cleared for contact during Blues practices. Berglund is still recovering from surgery he had back in August on his shoulder, but the news that he’s been cleared for contact means that a return is in the very near future.

Berglund is still a polarizing topic for Blues fans, but there aren’t any fans who would argue that depth is a bad thing. Currently, the Blues are rolling out a hodgepodge of Magnus Paajarvi, Scottie Upshall, Scott Gomez and even Jordan Caron up front. The team has received varying returns from those four, but it would be nice to have an additional option should things go south. Berglund is streaky, but when he’s on he’s a much better choice compared to those four.
At the same time, Berglund’s return could free up the Blues to package a few pieces together to make a trade. Most fans would like to see Berglund traded … but that window has been passed over again and again.
