Jake Allen’s recovery from a knee injury he suffered in January appears to be progressing. Allen is continuing to join the Blues for their morning skates as a full participant, but so far he hasn’t joined the team for a regular practice.
Though it sounds like Allen’s return is nearing, Ken Hitchcock isn’t ready to talk about his return.
Hitchcock via the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
“I don’t know what’s going on there. When he starts practicing and we’re down to two goalies, then we’ll be able to go from there. I don’t know exactly what the mindset is there. I don’t even know when he’s scheduled to participate. There’s a difference between pregame skates and practices. He hasn’t come into a practice yet. Until he does that, I don’t think we can even talk about him.”
Blues fans have barely noticed Allen is missing due to the incredible play of Brian Elliott, but everyone recognizes how important it is to get Allen back on the roster. Elliott’s play has been outstanding, but no one wants to think about what could happen should Elliott stumble or even go down with an injury of his own.
At the very least, Elliott has claimed the net as his own. Allen nearing a return is exciting as far as depth is concerned, but he will be returning as the clear #2 on the chart.
