The new deal for Jaden Schwartz is right on the money

Jaden Schwartz and the Blues finally agreed on a new contract and it’s one which should be viewed as a win for both sides. It looked like an arbitrator would be needed to decide on a new contract for Schwartz after the two sides failed to reach a deal despite being the “top priority”, but thankfully the Blues avoided what could have turned into an ugly situation and have settled on a five-year, $26.75 million contract which will keep Schwartz in the mix through 2020-21.

The new deal for Schwartz will carry an annual cap hit of $5.35 million. That figure is a bit lower than many predicted (forecasts called for something closer to $6 million per year), yet also represents a nice raise for the 24-year-old who previously made $2.7 million in 2015-16.

The Blues successfully locked up one of their best forwards for a sum below $6 million. That’s probably the best case scenario considering he recorded 63 points in 75 games just two seasons ago and was extremely productive (22 points in 33 games) when he wasn’t injured last season. His value to the Blues is difficult to state as his talents beyond the tangible offensive production is in addition to a strong forecheck and relentless pursuit of the puck.

Schwartz should be pleased with this new deal as it carries a decent number of years – five – at a rate which is almost double what he was previously making. The term should be perfect for Schwartz as at the end of the deal he’ll be 29 and may hope to receive an even larger raise should his strong production continue over the next several seasons.

The Blues have made some highly questionable decisions this summer, but the new deal for Schwartz is right on the money.
