Player of the Game
Without a doubt, the star of the show tonight was Indians’ left fielder Michael Brantley and his pair of two-run bombs in the fourth and eighth innings. Brantley has always been a player that creates hope for the fans once he steps into the box and tonight he lit up the place. For being the first cool-weather game this side of the All Star break, the butts stayed in their seats to watch the Brantley show and happily took in the brisk Cleveland air with the confidence of hearing “Cleveland Rocks” in a matter of innings. Dr. Smooth went 3-4 with four RBIs and a pair of homers, making this his third multi-homer game in his career.
Feathers Up
The Indians offense tonight was on fire in the middle of downtown Cleveland. Carlos Santana tied the game up 1-1 in the bottom of the first, doubling to center field to bring in Jason Kipnis. Following Santana’s lead, Lonnie Chisenhall hit a line drive single to center field, scoring Michael Brantley and giving Cleveland the 2-1 lead. Kipnis joined the party with his 34th double, scoring Giovani Urshela in the bottom of the second and tacking on another run, and just to be a good teammate, rookie, Francisco Lindor brought Kip home from third on a line drive single.
The bats continued throughout the game to push the Tribe closer to a win. Brantley, Lindor and Kipnis all went 3-4 on the night, with some help by a few Brewers throwing errors, a triple by Almonte, and some serious dealt pitching. RHP Josh Tomlin made his first start at home since returning off the DL. He kept the Brewers in check in six innings of work, only giving up five hits, four runs and striking out seven.
Feathers Down
The Brewers power-bats were in full force tonight, bringing in the only runs they would get in the game. Four bombs, one starting the game by Jonathan Lucroy, who would also homer in the top of the eighth. Another off the bat of Domingo Santana, tying the game 2-2 in the top of the second and a two-run shot to right field from Ryan Braun in the sixth inning.
