Ryan Fitzpatrick: How one punch changed the season for the NY Jets

It’s amazing how a single punched changed the season for the New York Jets.

Geno Smith was out after being sucker punched by a teammate, journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick was in, and while the rest of the league gushed and raved about the Buffalo Bills in the AFC East and all the moves they made, it was the Jets who would be the biggest benefactor of one of the more under the radar moves on the season.

It’s the kind of move that a team like the Dallas Cowboys, who missed Tony Romo for all but three games, would have benefited from. Players like Fitzpatrick get overlooked because of his journeyman status, however he’s a very good QB who has produced wherever he has played.

The Fitz is putting career best numbers right now, but more importantly, he’s got the Jets in the drivers seat to make the playoffs. Sitting at 5-5 through 10 games, Fitzpatrick and the Jets have peaked at the right time, winning 5 straight games, including a pair of overtime wins against the New York Giants and New England Patriots. During that span, The Fitz has fired 12 touchdown passes to just a single interception (and probably won a lot of people fantasy football championships too).

The Harvard Bomber ranks 13th in yards passing and 10th in touchdown passes, and could be in line to land a monster contract extension, keeping him as the starting QB for the Jets for a while.

From ESPN’s Rich Cimini:

If he stays with the Jets, Fitzpatrick, 33, could land a deal that will pay him as much as $12 million annually, according to a prominent agent. He’s making $3.25 million this season, the final year of the two-year deal he signed with the Houston Texans.

One punch.

Think about that. Amazing.
