Brock Osweiler is the biggest fish in the quarterback free agency market in 2016, and where he ultimately ends up signing will determine where the rest of the field winds up.
There appears to be a two team horse race for Osweiler’s services- the Houston Texans and the Denver Broncos.
We’ll make the case for both teams to sign Brock and where we think he’ll end up playing ball over the course of the next couple of seasons.
Denver
Why wouldn’t Osweiler want to go back to the defending Super Bowl Champs as their full time starting QB? They’ve got the defense, they’ve got the offensive line, the running game, two 1,000 yard receivers, and Brock knows the offense. He’s been with Denver since 2012, he knows the team, management, ownership, and he got a taste of playing time last season.
For the Broncos, this is the best move because there is no real adjustment period, just insert Osweiler and get ready for the NFL Draft.
Houston
Put simply, Houston might just lure away Osweiler from Denver at the right price. Last checked, the Broncos were offering Brock a 3-year deal worth around $39 million with incentives. For a QB that has played in only 7 games, that’s not bad, but it’s also not great.
A three year deal doesn’t exactly scream “commitment” from the Broncos organization, but rather, it comes off as a short term deal, leaving the Broncos with an out by signing Brock to a short, 3-year deal while selecting a QB in the upcoming draft. If he pans out, great, if he doesn’t, we’ll that’s ok because we’re grooming someone like Connor Cook from Michigan State anyway.
Houston could offer him a longer term deal, say 4-5 years, showing a true commitment to Osweiler. Then there’s also the matter of Brock being benched in the middle of a one point game against San Diego earlier this season. What does that say to the free agent QB?
They needed a spark? Yes. But it also shows Denver didn’t have a ton of faith in No. 17.
Brock didn’t start another game the rest of the year.
Those two moves by the Broncos, could sway Osweiler away from Denver and over to Houston, which we believe will happen. Brock Osweiler will take the contract that not only offers more money, but one that shows a true commitment to the signal caller who backed up Peyton Manning for the last four seasons, and that team will be the Houston Texans.
