The Sox were looking for their first victory of the series with the Royals and they had their ace Chris Sale on the mound. Sale pitched into the 9th inning and came just shy of a complete game. The Sox bats showed up for him and Sale got his 9th win of the season. The Sox also had sole possession of 1st place in the AL East with that win.
The Royals ended up scoring first when Moustakas hit a solo home run off of Sale in the 2nd inning. Sox 0-1. The Sox got that run right back in the top of the 3rd inning when Betts hit an RBI single to score Marrero. Sox 1-1. The Sox then scored 4 runs in the 4th inning to give Sale some breathing room. Travis hit an RBI single, Leon hit a 2 run RBI double and then Marrero hit an RBI sac fly. Sox 5-1.
Sale just kept trucking through the Royals and the Sox even gave him 3 more runs of support in the 6th when Chris Young hit a RBI double and Bogaerts hit a two run RBI single. Sox 8-1. Sale was still on the mound in the 9th inning and was looking for the complete game. Unfortunately for Sale he started to crack a bit in the inning and he wouldn’t be able to finish it. Sale issued a walk to Merrifield, a 2 run homer to Bonifacio and then a single to Moss. Farrell came out to get Sale and he was clearly furious that he wasn’t able to finish it out. I think he was more mad at himself than anything else. I love that competitive spirit. Fernando Abad came out to relief Sale and ended the game with a ground ball double play. Sox 8-3.
Red Sox 8 Royals 3 BOXSCORE
