The Sox had a getaway day game on Thursday with the Jays before heading out west for a 6 game swing. The Sox had Doug Fister on the mound vs. Francisco Liriano for the Jays. Fister continued to struggle and he wasn’t helped by some poor defense behind him. The Sox bats tried to battle back, but it was too little, too late.
Fister gave up a single run in the 1st when he gave up an RBI double to Donaldson. Sox 0-1. The Sox battled back and took the lead in the 2nd when Leon hit an RBI double and then Betts hit a 2 run RBI single. Sox 3-1. Unfortunately the Jays returned the favor in the 3rd when they scored 4 runs and took the lead right back. Pearce hit what would have been the 3rd out of the inning, but Holt lost the ball in the sun and two runs scored on the play. Sox 3-3. Goins then hit a 2 run RBI single to put the Jays out in front. Sox 3-5. Fister gave up another run in the top of the 5th with a solo home run to Smoak. The fifth inning would be his last and it couldn’t come soon enough. Sox 3-6.
Fernando Abad took the mound in the 6th. He got one out, but also issued two walks to be pulled from the inning. Ben Taylor came in to try to finish it off. Taylor got the 2 outs, but he also allowed a run to score when he gave up an RBI single to Smoak. Sox 3-7. Kyle Martin came out in the 7th and pitched himself a scoreless frame. In the bottom of the 7th, the Sox tried to stage a comeback when Dustin Pedroia hit a 3 run homer. The Sox were now within one run. Sox 6-7. Brandon Workman pitched a scoreless 8th inning, but his luck ran out in the 9th. Workman gave up a lead off home run to Smoak in the 9th to have the Jays now up by 2 runs. Sox 6-8. The Sox couldn’t get anything going against Jays closer Osuna in the 9th and the Jays took the final game of the series.
