Pineda Ejected and LacKKKKKKKKKKKey Dominates in Sox Win!

The Red Sox came into the game really needing a win after getting beat up by the Yanks in the first game of the series.  Lackey was on the mound for the Sox hoping to rebound from his previous two poor starts.  Michael Pineda was on the mound for the Yanks and the drama concerning substances would show itself again and send him packing in the 2nd inning.

Michael Pineda dominated the Sox the last time he faced them, but he would not show that same dominance in the 1st inning last night.  Pineda started the game by giving up a leadoff triple to Sizemore and then Pedey brought him home with an RBI single.  Pierzynski also hit an RBI single to have the Sox up 2-0.  In the 2nd inning Pineda came back out to the mound and had a very noticeable amount of pine tar on his neck.  Farrell had no choice, but to come out and ask him to be checked.  The umpire checked Pineda and he was ejected from the game.  David Phelps was in the game and trying to go as long as possible.  Phelps gave up a couple more runs in the bottom of the 3rd when Napoli hit an RBI ground rule double and then Ortiz scored on a wild pitch.  Sox 4-0.

While the Yankees were dealing with drama with their pitching, Lackey was just dealing.  Lackey was throwing strikes and just dominating the Yankee lineup.  The only run Lackey gave up was in the 6th inning when he gave up a sac fly to Soriano.  Sox 4-1.  The Sox would get that run back in the 8th when Brock Holt hit an RBI single to score Bogaerts.  Sox 5-1.  Lackey pitched 8 strong innings and looked the best he has looked all season.  Lackey threw 84 of his 111 pitches for strikes and struck out 11 batters during his outing.    His pitching line for the night was 111 pitches, 8 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 BB and 11 Ks.  Koji Uehara came out in the 9th and gave up a single, but then struck out the next 3 batters to get the win for the Sox.
