With names like Dante Bichette, Dwight Smith and Tyler (son of Sid) Bream popping up in the daily MLB Draft re-caps, it is hard not to feel nostalgic.
Notice I said “feel nostalgic” and not “feel old”.
Either way, add them to Kyle Gaedele (great-nephew of former Major League sideshow Eddie Gaedel) and you’re going to read a lot of stories about second and third generation players being taken in this year’s amateur draft.
Enter hockey God Wayne Gretzky’s son Trevor.
The 18-year-old Gretzky was drafted Tuesday in the seventh round (219th overall) by the Chicago Cubs.
The left-handed hitting first baseman stands 6’4″ and is currently committed to play baseball at San Diego State, where Major League Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn is head coach.
But he might not ever get there.
“After the draft takes place and we find out where he’s going to go and what situation he’s in,” the elder Gretzky said prior to his son being drafted by the Cubs, “then we’ll sit down and talk about it as a family.”
Whatever Gretzky ends up doing, it is possible he might end up in the same lineup as fellow Cubs draft pick Shawon Dunston Jr. who was taken in the 11th round on Tuesday.
That said, Junior Dunston is a far cry from Gretzky’s Westlake Village (California) Oaks Christian High teammates…Nick Montana and Trey Smith.
