More Like “Field of Erroneous Scorekeeping”

It was bound to happen, right?

Not that long ago, Larry Granillo from Baseball Prospectus figured out what game Ferris Bueller was at in the aptly titled film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”.

Then, just last week, the boys over at The Hardball Times cracked the case of what game Steve Rogers (aka “Captain America”) was referencing in “Captain America: The First Avenger”.

And now…there’s this:

Field of Dreams opened in cinemas on April 21, 1989.

During the film, as you know, Kevin Costner’s character goes to Fenway Park with James Earl Jones’ character to watch the Red Sox play the Athletics.  

There is a brief shot of Kevin Costner (or a hand pretending to be Kevin Costner) keeping score. 

The camera shows the following, mostly-incomplete names on the scorecard: 

EED 

RRETT 

BOGGS 

ANS  

WELL 

I checked Baseball-Reference.com to see which game they went to.

Craig Robinson, he of the widely popular website Flip Flop Flyin’, unraveled the mystery of the Boston Red Sox game that Ray Kinsella dragged Terence Mann to in the 1989 movie “Field of Dreams”.

And as Robinson pointed out (go click the link above or click THIS ONE to see the entire post)…it was more like “Field of Erroneous Scorekeeping”.

Then again…this isn’t the first time Costner has gotten it wrong.
