Now that his employment is in jeopardy, much is going to be made of the Terry Francona-led Boston Red Sox and their collapse (7-20 in September!) and, well, it probably should.
What intially plays like a throwaway paragraph after the jump of a story that appeared over at BostonHerald.com was picked up by the always insightful Aaron Gleeman over at HardballTalk.
John Tomase of the Boston Herald has some details on how the Red Sox’s clubhouse atmosphere deteriorated this season, including a report that “more than one pitcher drank beer in the clubhouse during games on the days he didn’t pitch”.
Because relievers don’t really have off days that suggests “pitchers” are really “starting pitchers” and that narrows down the list of candidates considerably.
Alright…I’m with Gleeman on this one. This is kinda huge.
Sure, sure, Tomase mentions the trite “clubhouse imbibing is a tradition as old as baseball itself”…but why is that acceptable? Furthermore, why is that acceptable while your team is in the midst of a pennant chase and an historic collapse?!?
Most importantly though…how do we know it was just the pitchers on their off days AND how common is this elsewhere throughout the Majors?
