Baltimore Signs Matt Antonelli

It’s been a while since our good friend Matt Antonelli made some news.

Well, Antonelli fans…wait no longer!  As the gang over at MLB Trade Rumors reports…the former San Diego Padres infielder (and prolific blogger) looks to be competing for a job with the Baltimore Orioles next season.

The Orioles have signed Matt Antonelli to a Major League contract, pending a physical. Antonelli was taken 17th overall by the Padres in the 2006 draft and has 65 Major League plate appearances to his name, all in 2008 with San Diego.

The 26-year-old posted an .847 OPS in the Nationals’ system last year, playing almost all his games with Triple-A Syracuse. Antonelli was originally drafted as a second baseman but spent time at second, third, shortstop and left field last year and is expected to compete for Baltimore’s third base job next season.

“I’m really excited to have an opportunity with Baltimore,” the newly signed Antonelli said, “I think they are a team that will be on the rise in the next few years and I’m looking forward to contributing any way I can.”

Of course, the signing of Antonelli isn’t the only new development to hit Baltimore.  Ealier this week, the club unveiled their new uniforms.

“I think they look pretty sweet,” the infielder added. “Looks like it will be a cool old school look. I like it.”

Hopefully, a return back to the Majors and some exposure in the American League East will mean fewer autograph requests for “Mark” Antonelli.
