The Sox had a chance on Sunday to sweep the Rays in the series finale. The Sox had Rick Porcello on the mound vs. Alex Cobb of the Rays. The Sox got an early lead, but weren’t able to hold on to it. Porcello ended up with the loss, which meant it was his 17th loss of the season. He is definitely having a polar opposite season from last year, both in how he is pitching and in the amount of run support the team has given him.
The Sox got on the board in the 2nd inning when Vazquez hit an RBI single to score Moreland. Sox 1-0. The Sox thought they had a 2nd run in the inning when Vazquez came home. The umpire initially called him out, but then the replay looked like he was absolutely safe. New York ended up deciding that he was still out, so the inning ended and the Sox didn’t get the run. I like having replay, but it seems silly when they can’t get an obvious call right. Porcello kept the Sox in the lead until 5th. The Rays tied the game up when Ramos hit an RBI single. Sox 1-1. The Rays didn’t stop there though as they took the lead when Porcello gave up an RBI single to Longoria. Sox 1-2. Porcello threw a lot of pitches in that inning and he meant he’d be done after 5. In the span of getting 3 outs, he went from in line to the win to in line for the loss.
Brandon Workman came out and pitched the 6th inning. Workman gave up a solo home run to Ramos to have the Rays up 3-1. Then in the 7th inning Robby Scott gave up a solo home run to Duda. Sox 1-4. The Sox bullpen finished out the game, but since the Sox bats didn’t score again after the 2nd inning, the win was easy to come by for the Rays. The Yankees won yesterday, so the lead in the AL East shrunk to 3.5 games. The Rays headed out of town and instead of heading home to Tampa, they are heading to Citi Field to play a “home” series against the Yankees. Tampa was hit pretty hard by the hurricane, so the Rays and MLB had to find them a home away from home.
