Friday 5: Thomas McAllister

Friday 5: Thomas McAllister

Baseball is a game built on superstition.  From a pitcher not stepping on the foul line to and from the mound or a player eating the same thing every day during a hitting streak.

Well, its fans are no different.

Enter Thomas McAllister.  Dude takes the superstition of a “playoff beard”, or in his case, the “championship beard”, to a whole different level.  You see, McAllister has decided to continue growing his beard until one of the Washington D.C. teams wins a championship.

And in case you’re wondering…the last time a team from our Nation’s capital won a championship was in 1991 when the Redskins won SuperBowl XXVI.  The Capitals, Nationals and Wizards have never hoisted a championship trophy.

HOVG:  Alright, right out of the gate, I’ve gotta know…when and how did you decide to launch “No Shave Till a Championship”?

McALLISTER:  I started my "No Shave Till A Championship" June 1, 2012…the day before I got married. I always wanted to grow a beard but my wife hates it, so I said I will shave once a Washington D.C. team wins the big one. Thus "Lombeardi" began. Oh, the name "Lombeardi" was chosen by my blog followers and it's awesome!

HOVG:  And your wife is cool with this or has the beard taken on a life of its own and she really has no say at this point?

McALLISTER:  She hates my beard! She misses my face underneath. "Lombeardi" has taken on a life of his own.  First the blog, now close to 1200 followers, then the Washington Post did an article on "Lombeardi" and now this! It has become bigger than I expected and looking forward for what's to come! So my wife has no say, even though she threatens me saying she will spike my drink and shave me while I am passed out.  (Laughs)

HOVG:  I’ve gotta think that you prefer Jayson Werth’s beard over everyone else’s in the Majors.  Assuming that’s the case, after Werth, what players have the best beards?

McALLISTER:  Best beards go to Josh Reddick and Brian Wilson…in that order. Don't get me wrong, the jet black beard of Brian is sweet but Reddick's is awesome! I am partial to the red beards because I have one myself.

HOVG:  The Nationals led the league in wins last season , we’re months from the football season starting, the Caps are heading to the NHL Playoffs and the Wizards are, well, the Wizards…what team do you think is going to force you to shave first?

McALLISTER:  I would love to see the Caps win the Stanley Cup this season, but I would have to say the Nats are my best shot. A lot of people have them winning the World Series which would be huge for DC. Redskins have a chance if RG3 is healthy and Wizards are the Wizards. I do  think a name change could help the young talent.

HOVG:  It’s six months from now, let’s pretend that the Nationals win the World Series…what’s next?

McALLISTER:  Hopefully the Nats shave "Lombeardi off". My blog followers are trying to get the teams to shave him if they win. Again, never thought it would become that big but who would not want that to happen to them? After "Lombeardi" is gone, I am still going to support all my teams 100% and keep the blog on Facebook going. I am also going to enjoy life with my soon-to-be-born daughter in August. GO REDSKINS, CAPS, NATS, and WIZ!

You can follow Thomas McAllister (and “Lombeardi”) on both Facebook and Twitter.  Suffice it to say, as facial hair fanatics…The Hall of Very Good will be following his antics throughout the season or upcoming seasons.
